Period Poverty and Education

No girl should have to miss out on her education because of her period – either through lack of access to sanitary products, or because of the symptoms she has to struggle with each month.

Its heartbreaking to hear stories of young women having to use things such as socks, tissues, and even newspaper because they cannot afford to buy sanitary products.

I was pleased to hear the government have announced funding to provide free sanitary products in all secondary schools in England – definitely a step in the right direction! (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-47553449)

However, I’d like to see things go further. Access to sanitary products is essential, but younger women need to know more about their periods. They need to be educated about what to expect before they start, and that they can get help if their periods become too heavy or painful – period pain shouldn’t be a reason for missing out on education either!
